# Get item metadata

> Returns the metadata layer for one item — `tags`, `tier`, `state`. Use when you have the item id and need the metadata fields without fetching the full item. For bulk reads, prefer `GET /items?include=metadata` to hydrate metadata inline across a page. See [Metadata](/concepts/metadata).
